Mom’s Day Out Event – Sun Life Financial Philippines

Being a mother makes me feel that I’m a very strong and successful person. Who wouldn’t be anyway? Motherhood is a tough job, this is what we always say.

I feel so proud and accomplished because I am able to work at home while being a hands-on mom to my kids. Our current setup makes our family happy, perfect life indeed!

However, there are times I think that my body is feeling the opposite. I always feel tired and I know sleeping only 5 hours a day is the culprit. I look worn out and I even remember that it’s been months since I last had my manicure/pedicure. I look old-fashioned because I don’t even have the time and budget to update my wardrobe. Trust me, I feel so exhausted lately that I long for a break, even just for a day.

This is why when I received an invitation to attend Sun Life PH event called Mom’s Day out, I replied Yes without second thoughts. For me, it was an answered prayer. During the event, Mommies were treated with a 1-hour whole body massage at The SPa at Cebu, followed by enjoying food and talk at Cafe Laguna. I attended without the kids which was a good thing as I was able to mingle with some Cebu Mommy Bloggers and also, I was able to listen properly to the speakers.

Balanced Motherhood

During the talk, I always see myself nodding and laughing especially to the discussion of Mommy Michelle Alignay, a Family Specialist, about the “Balanced Motherhood”. I totally agree when she said that MOM means “Master of Multitasking”. Seriously, we mommies are really like ‘Wonder Woman’. I myself, breastfeed my 14-month old baby while working or blogging, at the same time tutoring my pre-schooler. That’s three task at once! At the end of the day, with all the exhaustion that I feel, with all the countless moments I’ve turned my ‘beast mode’ on trying to get my eldest listen to me, I admit that I don’t have a balanced motherhood.

According to Mommy Michelle, re-balancing is important and it can be done through proper self-care. We Mommies should be proactive in caring for ourselves. Below are just few of the tips she gave:

  1. Extending few minutes in the shower
  2. Put a little color on your face
  3. Find a spot in your home for reflection
  4. Saying NO is okay (and needed at times)
  5. Flirt with your spouse

She reminded me to love myself more in order for me to be the best mom and wife. She ended the talk by telling us that MOM also means “Master of Myself”. Now I really need to schedule that long overdue manicure/pedicure and perhaps allot budget to shop for myself.

Financial Planning

When it comes to family finances, I can say my husband Fred and I are quite good-savers (but sadly we’re not yet debt-free). Apart from having bank savings, we also have few amount invested in stocks and both of us are proud Sun Life policy holders (Sun FlexiLink). Right now, we’re looking for more affordable insurance for our kids. Good thing the second speaker that day, Rosario Madonna Rivera, talked about Sun Life’s MyFuture Fund.

MyFuture Fund is a target date fund that invests primarily in high-quality stocks and a mix of government and domestic corporate debt in accordance with an asset allocation strategy that promotes capital appreciation at the onset to maximize earning potential in the earlier years and shifts to wealth preservation to reduce exposure to risk as the maturity of the fund approaches.” – source: Sun Life website

Mom’s day out event was really an eye-opener for me, thank you Sun Life PH! Oh look at me here, feeling recharge after the massage!
